Different Colored Eyes Day, observed July 12, is a light-hearted celebration of one of nature’s most unique traits: eyes that are not the same color.
This difference is called heterochromia, and it can appear in several ways. Some individuals have two completely different eye colors, while others may have a section of the iris in a different shade, or a ring of color around the pupil that stands apart from the rest of the eye.
Heterochromia is most often a natural variation in pigmentation and is usually inherited, though it can also develop in other ways. It can occur in humans and in animals, and is often most noticeable in domesticated pets and other familiar animals we see in everyday life.
Whether in people or animals, different colored eyes are a simple reminder of the variety found in nature and the unique details that make each living being one of a kind.
