Cumberland Nursing and Rehab’s resident of the month, Pauline, brings radiant warmth and gratitude to our community. Born in the 1930s and raised on a farm, Pauline’s life has been shaped by hard work, enduring love, and the joy of simple pleasures—a legacy she carries with her every day. Pauline’s story begins in the rolling fields of her childhood farm, where she learned the value of perseverance and family. In 1950, she married the love of her life—a farmer whose dedication to the land mirrored her own. For decades, she thrived as a farmer’s wife, embracing rural life with pride. “I loved every moment of it,” she shares. “There’s nothing like working side by side with someone you love, watching the seasons change.” Though her hands are now busy with needlework—a passion she’s perfected over the years—her heart remains tied to the farm. Ask Pauline about her favorite part of life at Cumberland, and her eyes light up. “Bingo!” she’ll shout excitedly. The game has become the highlight of her days, but it’s the people who truly make her smile. She calls the staff and residents her “second family,” praising their kindness and support. “They’re so good to me. I couldn’t ask for better care or company.” Her gratitude extends to Cumberland’s therapy team, who’ve helped her achieve personal goals with patience and expertise. “They never let me give up,” she says. “They push me just enough to remind me I’m still capable of so much.” Family sits at the center of Pauline’s happiest memories. Thanksgiving is her favorite holiday time to gather with loved ones and share stories, and what stories she has! One of her fondest recollections is of her first love, who’d visit her on horseback in their youth. “Back then, we didn’t have cars,” she laughs. “But he’d ride for hours just to see me. That’s how you knew it was real.” Today, Pauline’s storytelling sparkles during social hours at Cumberland. Residents and staff alike gather to hear her tales of farm life, young love, and the changing world she’s witnessed. “Life’s all about the people you meet and the memories you make,” she says. “I’ve been blessed with both.” Pauline’s resilience, humor, and gratitude inspire everyone around her. Whether she’s stitching intricate needlework, cheering on a fellow Bingo player, or sharing wisdom from her 90+ years, she reminds us all to cherish life’s simple joys. When asked what she’s most thankful for, Pauline doesn’t hesitate: “Family—the one I was born into, the one I married into, and the one I’ve found here. Love is what keeps us going.” Join us in celebrating Pauline —a woman whose life is a testament to love, hard work, and the power of a good story
