For Barbara, a longtime resident of Cumberland Nursing and Rehab, joy comes in many forms: the scent of roses in the courtyard, the thrill of a bingo win, and the familiar twang of an Elvis impersonator crooning “Blue Suede Shoes.” This October, her unwavering positivity and vibrant spirit earned her the honor of Resident of the Month, a title she humbly accepts with gratitude. Barbara’s story begins in Somerset, Kentucky, where she built a life centered on family. She married her late husband, Arthur, raised two daughters, and spent years as a dedicated homemaker. Later, she discovered a love for cosmetology, a career that allowed her to blend creativity with service. “I loved making people feel confident,” she recalls. Though she retired from professional hairstyling years ago, her passion for beauty endures. Today, she keeps her skills sharp by practicing makeup techniques and dreams of pampering fellow residents and staff at Cumberland. “I’d love to do the girls’ makeup,” she says with a grin. “Everyone deserves to feel special.” Since moving to Cumberland Nursing and Rehab, Barbara has experienced a renewed sense of stability. The care and support from staff have not only improved her health but also reinvigorated her ability to pursue her passions. “Being here has made me more stable all around,” she explains. “Now I can focus on doing what I love, like makeup and spending time outside.” Her daily routine often includes visits to the courtyard, where she takes her own advice to heart: “Go outside, smell the roses more, and do more of what makes you happy.” She’s also a regular at bingo nights, where her competitive streak and lively banter keep the games spirited. One of Barbara’s favorite Cumberland traditions is the facility’s Elvis-themed events. When asked about the King’s greatest hit, she laughs: “Nothing beats ‘Hound Dog’ live!” But beyond the music and games, it’s the sense of community that stands out to her. “The staff treat me like family,” she says. “That makes all the difference.” As October’s Resident of the Month, Barbara feels deeply grateful. “It’s an honor to know people think so highly of me,” she shares. Her story serves as a reminder that resilience, joy, and simple pleasures—like roses, makeup brushes, and a good game of bingo—can create a life rich with purpose. Cumberland Nursing and Rehab is proud to celebrate Barbara, a beacon of warmth and inspiration for all who know her.
